How to Use Packing Cubes (And Why They Actually Work)

Packing cubes have a reputation problem. People either swear by them or dismiss them as an unnecessary extra layer between them and their clothes. The dismissers haven't used them right.

Here's what packing cubes actually do — and how to use them so they earn their place in every trip.

What they're not

Packing cubes are not compression devices (with some exceptions). They don't make your clothes smaller. What they do is give your bag internal structure — the same way drawers give your closet structure. Without them, a carry-on is one big pile. With them, it's organized space you can actually navigate.

The system that works

The most effective approach is to pack by category, not by day. Resist the urge to pack "Monday's outfit" into one cube. Instead:

  • Cube 1 — Tops. Roll them. Rolling reduces wrinkles and lets you see everything without unpacking.
  • Cube 2 — Bottoms. Fold flat or roll, depending on the fabric.
  • Cube 3 — Underwear and socks. Small cube. Bundle pairs together so socks never separate.
  • Cube 4 — Layer or extras. Packable jacket, workout gear, or anything that doesn't fit the first three categories.

When you're at the hotel and want a top, you open one cube. You don't unpack your entire bag.

How they work in a carry-on

Lay your cubes flat into the bag like books on a shelf — not stacked on top of each other. This way you can see every cube when you open the bag and pull out exactly what you need. Stacking means digging.

The airport security advantage

When TSA asks you to remove items from your bag, a packed-with-cubes carry-on goes back together in seconds. Everything has a place. You're not repacking in the middle of a security lane. This is underrated.

The dirty laundry trick

Bring one extra cube — or use a packing cube that's clearly different — as a designated dirty laundry bag. Clean and dirty stay separated the entire trip. When you get home, you pull out the dirty cube and go straight to the laundry. Your bag never becomes a pile of clean-and-dirty chaos.

Size matching matters

Most packing cube sets come in small, medium, and large. Medium handles tops well. Large works for bulkier items. Small is ideal for underwear and socks. If your set is all one size, it works — you'll just use some cubes more than others.

Packing cubes won't change how you travel overnight. But after one trip with them, going back feels like going backwards.
