How to Pack for a Long-Haul Flight
Share
A long-haul flight isn't just transportation. It's 9, 12, 14 hours in a confined space — and how well you packed for it determines most of how you feel when you land.
There are two packing jobs happening on a long-haul: what goes in the overhead bin and what stays under the seat in front of you. Most people only think about one of them.
The overhead bin bag
This is your carry-on — clothes, shoes, toiletry bag. Pack it as you normally would, using packing cubes to keep everything contained. It goes up, it comes down at the destination. You won't touch it during the flight.
The under-seat bag — this is the one that matters
Your personal item stays at your feet. This is your in-flight toolkit. Pack it with intention:
- Noise-canceling earbuds or earplugs — non-negotiable on anything over 4 hours
- Eye mask — cabin lights go up and down on long flights regardless of time zone
- Light layer — planes run cold, especially overnight
- Water bottle — filled after security. Ask the flight attendant to refill it. Stay hydrated.
- Snacks — a handful of things you actually want to eat, not whatever the cart has left
- Lip balm and hand cream — cabin air is dry. Your skin will tell you this by hour 4.
- Pen — for customs and arrival forms
- Phone, earbuds, battery bank — all accessible, not buried
The electronics organizer move
On a long-haul, your electronics organizer earns its place. Keep it at the top of your under-seat bag. Open it once, find your cable, charge your phone, close it. You don't want to dig for a cable in the dark at 2am over the Atlantic.
What to wear
Wear layers you can remove. Your comfort on the flight is mostly determined by what's on your body, not what's in your bag. Loose, breathable clothing. Slip-on shoes — your feet will expand slightly. Compression socks if you run long-haul regularly.
One thing most people forget
Pack a small zip-lock with a toothbrush, travel toothpaste, and face wipe in your personal item. On flights over 8 hours, brushing your teeth and doing a quick face refresh mid-flight changes how you feel for the second half. Completely worth the two inches of bag space it takes.
Land ready. Not wrecked.
