How to Pack for a Music Festival

Festival packing has its own logic. You're not packing for a hotel — you're packing for a campsite, a crowd, and three days of moving between stages in whatever the weather decides to do. The rules are different.
Here's how to pack for a festival without overpacking, underpacking, or losing anything important.
The festival carry-in is not your carry-on
Most festivals have bag size restrictions at the gate. Check the festival's website before you pack anything. The standard is usually a bag no larger than 14x14x6 inches for day entry. A small backpack or crossbody bag is what gets you through the gate — not a carry-on.
Your main bag stays at the campsite or the car. What you carry in is a separate, minimal kit.
What goes in your day bag
- Phone, portable battery bank, charging cable
- Sunscreen — reapply every two hours, not optional
- Lip balm and hand sanitizer
- Cash and a card — some vendors are cash only
- Earplugs — even if you're there for the music, your ears will thank you the next morning
- A rain poncho that packs to nothing
- Snacks
- Reusable water bottle — most festivals have free water refill stations
What goes in your main festival bag
Pack like you're going for a week and edit like you're going for three days. The instinct is to bring more because you'll be outside, active, and unpredictable. Resist it.
- 1 outfit per day plus one extra layer
- Comfortable walking shoes — broken in, not new
- Sandals for the campsite
- Swimwear if there's a pool or waterpark element
- Toiletry bag stocked with travel sizes — dry shampoo earns its weight
- A small first aid kit: blister pads, ibuprofen, antacid
What always gets forgotten
A portable phone charger is the most important thing at a festival. Your phone is your ticket, your map, your communication, and your camera. When it dies, you're stranded. Bring a battery bank with enough capacity for at least two full charges.
What to leave behind
Jewelry you'd be upset to lose. Anything irreplaceable. A full-size toiletry bag. More than one pair of boots.
Festival packing is about being light enough to move, organized enough to find what you need, and prepared enough to handle whatever the weekend brings.
