How to Pack for a College Football Road Trip
Share
College football road trips are their own category of travel. You're not packing for a business meeting or a beach — you're packing for a full weekend of tailgating, a packed stadium, and whatever the weather decides to do in September.
Here's how to do it right.
The game day bag
Most stadiums have clear bag policies. Check your team's policy before you pack anything. Standard is a clear plastic bag no larger than 12x6x12 inches or a one-gallon zip-lock bag. Your phone, cards, keys, ID, and a small snack are what go through the gate. Everything else stays at the tailgate or the hotel.
The road trip bag
This is your carry-on or overnight bag for the weekend. Pack like you're going for three days and edit like you're going for one. A college football road trip is not the weekend to bring a checked bag.
- Team gear — jersey, hat, and one backup layer in team colors
- 1 casual outfit for Saturday night after the game
- Travel day clothes — wear your bulkiest items on the drive
- Underwear and socks for each day plus one extra
- Toiletry bag pre-stocked and ready to grab
- Portable battery bank — stadiums drain phones fast between photos, maps, and mobile tickets
The weather problem
September college football weather is unpredictable. A noon kickoff in College Station can start at 95 degrees and end with a thunderstorm. Pack a packable rain poncho that folds to nothing and a light layer for night games. Both take almost no space and save the weekend when the forecast is wrong.
The tailgate essentials
If you're tailgating before the game, your car is your base camp. Keep a separate bag in the trunk with tailgate supplies — cooler, chairs, team flags. This stays in the car and never mixes with your overnight bag.
What to leave behind
Anything you'd be upset to lose in a crowd. Anything that won't fit in a clear bag at the gate. Your second pair of shoes.
Pack light, travel fast, and be in your seat before kickoff. That's the move.
