How to Pack for a Beach Trip
Share
Beach trips have a deceptively simple packing problem. The destination is casual, the activities are limited, and yet somehow people show up with oversized suitcases full of things they'll never use.
Here's how a beach trip actually packs.
The beach bag vs. the travel bag
Two separate bags serve two separate purposes on a beach trip. Your travel bag is your carry-on — clothes, toiletries, tech. Your beach bag is what you take to the sand each day — and it should be a packable tote that lives inside your carry-on until you need it.
Trying to make one bag do both jobs creates a mess of sandy, wet things mixed in with your clothes.
Clothing for a beach trip
Fewer pieces than you think. Swimwear for each day — or two sets that you alternate. A cover-up or light shorts over a swimsuit handles most daytime situations. Two or three casual evening outfits. Sandals for the beach, one more versatile shoe for evening.
Neutrals and basics. Beach trips aren't the destination where a wardrobe matters — they're the destination where you want to stop thinking about clothes.
The sunscreen situation
Buy it at the destination. Sunscreen is heavy, TSA-restricted in large sizes, and available everywhere near a beach. The exception is a specific SPF or formula you rely on — bring that in a travel-size refillable bottle and buy the full-size locally.
The toiletry bag for beach travel
Your pre-stocked hanging toiletry bag handles most of it. Add after-sun lotion, a small dry shampoo, and lip balm with SPF. Everything else is covered by what's already in the bag.
Tech on a beach trip
Minimal. Phone and charger. A waterproof phone pouch if you're doing water activities. A portable battery bank for long beach days. Leave the laptop at home if the trip allows it — if you bring it, it stays at the accommodation.
What beach travelers overpack
Books. Every beach traveler packs three books and reads one. Pack one book or an e-reader and go from there.
Also: formal options. Unless the itinerary specifically includes a nice dinner or an event, leave the dress clothes. A beach trip is a beach trip.
The sandy wet clothes problem
Beach days create damp, sandy clothes that need to live somewhere that isn't mixed in with your clean things. A designated packing cube for post-beach items — or a zip-lock bag for wet swimwear — solves this with no extra weight.
Pack light. Buy the sunscreen there. Read one book. That's the beach trip.
